Her development is very important to me. I have so many headcanons and ideas and designs yet no skill to draw it all fjerkj
Alright, well this is Spanish Panama. I guess I'll explain her design and then develop on how she was; - The dress is this old Panamanian pollera us.123rf.com/450wm/marzolino/m… - Golden belt represents the high gold quantities around the Spanish times, Panama being a big crossing point in importing gold from other colonies to Spain. It also represents rumors of El Dorado, which not only traces back to Colombia but to Panama. In all, around that time, Panama City was insanely wealthy. It was Spain's richest colony for a (very) little bit of time (because Mexico prospered more later on) - Her hair was shorter by a little, yes. It grew longer later on. - Because her 3-way split bangs on the current design represent the provincial-level indigenous regions, these bangs are a little more scattered. Panama was dense jungle even later than the 1940's, it still is, and it had more indigenous peoples back then (even though a large part of native history and tribes were wiped out completely by Spain. One of the tragedies about Panama is that there is almost no pre-colonial history because of the Spaniards) - People seem to forget that Panama was a Spanish colony for over 310 years while she was a Colombian colony for like 83 lmao. Panama's prosperity was very scattered, but because of the lost history I actually headcanon she'd be found by Spain at physical age closer to 9 rather than a tiny chibi. Therefore her age here is like... 14-ish?
After discovery, the isthmus of Panama became the route by which the treasures of the Inca Empire were transferred to Spain, attracting the unwelcome attention of English buccaneers—such as Sir Francis Drake, William Parker, Sir Henry Morgan*, and Edward Vernon—who swooped down on the gold-bearing galleons and the treasures of Portobelo.
*Henry Morgan in particular, an English pirate, has some interesting history with Panama. In all, its negative (one of the reasons she really doesn't like England, tbh). In 1671 he invaded Panama City for the high gold stock. The Spanish managed to load a lot of it into ships and sail it into the gulf, but the pirates took a lot by force from the citizens and Panama City was destroyed by fire (there are a few theories that the English set the fire at powder stores yet one of the bigger ones is that the citizens set fire to the city themselves to get the English out). After 4 weeks, Morgan left with 175 mule loads of loot and 600 prisoners. Two years later, a new city was founded at the location of the present-day capital. The sack of Panama violated the 1670 peace treaty between England and Spain.
That burning of Panama City actually resulted in a burn mark on my Panama's right shoulder blade at her back (it is on her official design lmao i need to draw it once). Thats because the ruins of Old Panama still stand as a historical landmark and attract tourism. I myself think ruins last are what leave scars on Hetalia characters.
I actually headcanon she'd like to sneak around her parts of land behind Spain's back because there are histories of Panama which take place during Spanish colonization which are forgotten but important. Such as the Cimarron peoples and their assistance to the English. (The Cimarron people were slaves that abandoned their Spanish masters. They allied with Sir Francis Drake early in the mid-1500's and helped them get Spanish gold because they despised the Spaniards. Of course, this isn't that important because Panama is a state-representation. The Panama City thing in 1671 holds the real importance, than that the Cimarron assistance to Drake).
I was born in Panama, and I was kinda sad that there wasn't a person for Panama..... Until now! I love her! She's so beautiful and well drawn. I love how you put a lot of research into your characters!
